Bariatric & Weight Loss Surgery in Pune

Bariatric surgical procedures result in weight loss by either reducing the quantity of food that can be held by the stomach, causing malabsorption of nutrients or by combining both gastric restriction and malabsorption of nutrients or by combining both gastric restriction and malabsorption. Standard gastric bypass(RYGB) is a combined procedure.

These procedures might also cause hormonal changes in the patient.

These surgeries are performed using minimally invasive techniques i.e laparoscopic surgery.

The most common procedures for bariatric surgery are the gastric bypass, sleeve gastrectomy, adjustable gastric and biliopancreatic diversion with duodenal switch (BPD/DS) band.

Each Of these surgeries has its own advantages.

Bariatric & Weight loss surgery has several benefits for patients who have trouble managing their weight such as having to take a lesser amount of medication and also losing weight.

Benefits of Obesity Surgery are:

  •  A reduced risk of cancer- A recent study found that obesity raises the probability of developing cancer by almost 50%, women are at even greater risk if they are just 10 kgs overweight Bariatric surgery reduces this risk in morbidly obese patients.
  • Obesity Can cause low self-esteem and reduce the quality of life. Bariatric surgery increases both of these.
  • It leads to an improvement of infertility in both males and females reduces the risk of complications during pregnancy.
  • Having a lower weight and healthier lifestyle caused by bariatric surgery leads to a longer life.

Gastric Bypass

In this procedure, there are usually two components.
First, a small stomach pouch, about one ounce or 30 millilitres in volume, is created by the division of the top of the stomach from the rest of it.

Next, The first portion of the small intestine is divided and the bottom end of the divided small intestine is brought up to be connected to the newly created small stomach pouch. The procedure is then completed by connecting the top portion of the divided small intestine to the small intestine further down so that the stomach acids and digestive enzymes from the bypassed stomach and initial portion of the small intestine will gradually mix with the food.

The gastric bypass works by several mechanisms. Like most bariatric procedures, the newly created stomach pouch is significantly smaller and allows for considerably smaller meals which means lesser calories are consumed.

Along with this, there is lesser digestion of food by the smaller stomach pouch and there is a segment of the small intestine which would normally absorb calories and nutrients but now no longer has any food going through it. Thus there is probably less absorption of calories and nutrients.

A significant factor to the success of gastric bypass surgery is strict adherence to a healthy pattern of eating by the patient after the surgery.

Advantages

  1. Helps in reliving obesity-related illness most common of which is T2DM, hypertension, cholesterol abnormalities etc.
  2. It produces considerable long-term weight loss (60 to 80 Percent excess weight loss).
  3. It restricts the amount of food that can be consumed.
  4. It produces helpful changes in gut hormones that reduce appetite and calorie consumption.

Sleeve Gastrectomy –

Gastric sleeve, also known as Sleeve Gastrectomy is a weight-loss surgery in which the stomach’s size is reduced to 25-30% of its original dimensions.
A large portion of the stomach is surgically removed following the major curve.

This leaves the stomach shaped like a tube or a sleeve with a banana shape. Thus the procedure permanently reduces the size of the stomach. The procedure is laparoscopic and is comparable in its effectiveness to Roux-en-Y gastric bypass. This procedure works because the new stomach pouch holds a significantly lesser volume than the normal stomach which reduces the calories and food that can be consumed.

The bigger impact is the effect the surgery has on gut hormones that control a number of factors including hunger, satiety and blood sugar levels. Sleeve Gastrectomy also has a positive impact on diabetes type 2.

Advantages

  1. It curtails the quantity of food the stomach can contain.
  2. It leads to quick and lasting weight-loss similar to those results produced by a Roux-en-Y gastric bypass. Weight loss of over 50% has been observed.
  3. The period of stay in the hospital is short and is approximately 2 days.
  4. The Procedure leads to changes in gut hormones which helps reduce craving and improve satiety.

Mini Gastric Bypass

The Mini-Gastric Bypass or single anastomosis gastric bypass is an effective and well-established procedure which combines some of the properties of a gastric sleeve and a standard gastric bypass. The upper part of the stomach is divided into a tube, similar to the top three-quarters of a sleeve, and then joined to a loop of intestine.

The mini-gastric bypass can be used as a primary weight loss procedure. It can also be used in patients who have had previous gastric banding or sleeve surgery but have been unsuccessful with weight loss, or who have had band-related complications and have decided on revision surgery.

The mini  bypass procedure helps you to lose weight in different ways:

  • By reducing the feeling of hunger through the altered gut to brain signalling.
  • By enabling an earlier feeling of satiety and fullness when eating a meal resulting in a healthy portion size
  • By decreasing the number of calories you absorb from your food as a result of bypassing 150 to 200cm of the upper part of the small intestine.
