A hernia is defined as an abnormal protrusion of a tissue or an organ, most commonly the bowel through the wall of the body cavity in which it resides. Hernias are formed by an opening in the fibrous tissue which forms the abdominal wall i.e the fascia. Hernias are of several types among which the most common are those involving the abdomen and groin among groin hernias, inguinal hernias are common but femoral hernias are also possible.
Other types of hernias include hiatus, incisional and umbilical hernias. About 66% of people with groin hernias have symptoms present. The symptoms may include pain or unease particularly when the patient coughs, exercises or goes to the bathroom. Hernias often worsen during the day but improve while lying down. A common sign is a bulging area that appears to become larger when bearing down. The largest concern with a hernia is the chance of strangulation, that is the blood supply to the part of the bowel getting blocked. This results in severe pain and tenderness in the area. Hiatal hernias often result in heartburn and may cause chest pain or pain while eating.
Hernioplasty is a hernia repair surgery where a mesh is placed and fixed over the weakened area of tissue so that a hernia doesn’t occur again.Dr. Sudhir Jadhav is the best Hernia Specialist in Pune.
Surgery for Hernia is the only treatment as no medicines/injections can treat it.
Surgery consists of hernia repair or Hernioplasty which can be –
a) Age old method – Open repair
b) Newer and advanced laparoscopic repair
Hernioplasty is the treatment of choice.
Advantages of Laparoscopic Hernia repair:
- Very small 5mm (2-3) cuts as compared to open surgery where the cut is approximately 8-10cm.
- Less post-operative pain.
- Lesser hospital stay (1-2 days).
- Faster recovery approximately 10-12 days as compared to almost 1 month for open surgery.

Herniorrhaphy is the oldest type of hernia surgery and is still being used occasionally in some cases mostly pediatric cases. It involves a surgeon making an incision directly over a hernia, then using surgical tools to open the cut enough to access it. Tissues or a displaced organ are then returned to their original location, and the hernia sac is removed. The surgeon stitches the sides of the muscle opening or hole through which a hernia protruded. Finally, the incision is closed.

In Hernioplasty, instead of stitching the muscle opening shut, the surgeon covers it with a flat, sterile mesh, usually made of polypropylene, or rarely animal tissue.
The surgeon makes small cuts around the hole in the shape of the mesh and then stitches the patch into the healthy, intact surrounding tissues.
Damaged or weak tissues surrounding the hernia will use the mesh, as a supportive, strengthening scaffold as they regrow.
Hernioplasty is better-known as tension-free hernia repair.
This procedure can be carried out either with open technique or with laparoscopy.
Types of a Hernia
The type of repair may depend on the nature of a hernia. Three types of hernias are most common, including:
A reducible hernia: When a hernia can be pushed back into the opening it came through.
Irreducible or incarcerated hernia: When the organ or abdominal tissues have filled the hernia sac, and it cannot be pushed back through the hole it came through.
Strangulated hernia: When part of an organ or tissue becomes stuck inside a hernia with its blood supply often cut off.
