Happy Aging met Dr. Sudhir Jadhav at his clinic in Kharadi, Pune to know more about Bariatric Surgeries in older adults. Dr. Sudhir Jadhav firmly denied the common myth of thinking of Bariatric Surgery as cosmetic surgery for weight loss. Instead, he said that it is a metabolic surgery. When bariatric surgery is performed on a particular patient, it changes the body’s metabolic rate to an extent that the person who is in the obese category starts losing weight. It changes a person’s BMR (basal metabolic rate) and an obese person starts gradually returning to a healthy BMI after the surgery. He enlisted a few disorders that are most commonly found with obese older adults like type 2 diabetes, hypertension, heart diseases, stroke, joint disorders, arthritis, and sleep apnea among others.
There are certain criteria defined by several associations across the world which guide patients for bariatric surgery. If the criteria are satisfied then the person is taken up for bariatric surgery. But if the person does not satisfy these criteria, then some alternative treatment methods like conservative methods or medicinal treatment can be used for weight loss.
On being asked about the criteria older adults have to consider while going for bariatric surgery, Dr. Sudhir Jadhav pointed out that the doctors after consultation and proper evaluation decide whether a person is eligible for bariatric surgery or not, based on a set of guidelines. In addition to this, the age of the patient, heart and kidney health, and mental health of an older adult are also important considerations. He also talked about different types of bariatric surgeries such as Sleeve Gastrectomy, Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass, Mini Gastric Bypass, Jejuno-Ileal Bypass, and SADI. Out of these, the Sleeve Gastrectomy is the most common type undertaken in India and many other countries including US.
